Okay, so to many this may be dumb, but I've probably made many mistakes thus far. I bought a 5 gallon tank set up at Walmart (yes I know)....put everythign in place, gravel, fake plants....water treatment, let it run for a good day or 2..then went and bought 1 Oscar (small about 2 inches or so) 1 Black Moor, some feeders and a sucker (black shark looking guy) All seemed very well for the first 2 weeks (it's in my office) the Oscar ate 3 feeders within 2 days, then stopped..the last feeder is still swimming in there now. I then had to travel for 1.5 weeks and my admin kept up with the daily feeding (fish food only) upon my return, the black moor died adn the oscar is barely moving, almost swimming sideways staying on the bottom.....any suggestions....based on reading on here the tank is way to small......

Welcome to the community

There isn't really any point in getting into a detailed discussion about why your tank is too small because it has probably become obvious to you now. You need to re-home the Oscar straightaway, you cannot keep it in that tank. If you don't do this it is going to die, that really is all I've got to say on this matter.

as I am unable to provide a larger tank for the Oscar, should I take him back to the store? How do the ones at the store survive?

Yes, you need to re-home the Oscar straightaway, 5 gallons isn't really big enough for a 2 inch Oscar so for the sake of its health, take it back to where you got it from.

The shops normally have a high turnover rate so the fish that they sell don't spend a great deal of time in the tanks. Some of the bigger fish stores have much larger tanks and sell large fish.

OFL is right, if you bought him at Wal-Mart I am not sure they will take him back. Try putting an add on Craigslist or in your local paper. But you do need to rehome him NOW!

Ummm. yeah.

Well, if Walmart doesn't take the fish back, try your Local Fish Store and trade it for another fish that will work for your office 10 gallon. I am sure the people at the LFS can help find a fish that is suitable and that you like. Good luck with your office tank, I am sure you will find some great fish that will bring you joy.

and, maybe someday you will have a bigger tank to give an Oscar a try.

Thanks all for the comments, I took him back to WalMart, they didn't want to refund, I told them just to take him back....as I had gotten a bit more info on the little guy. Of course I tried to argue that they really should educate their sales people a bit more, but who am I kidding. With that said, many more Oscar's will share his fate, but probably wont be returned...they'll just die any who, thanks. I'll look into some regular fish....in the near future....thanks again!
