Today while buying some food I was looking at the fish and saw some oscars that were black with white marbeling. Some also had red through the white like a tiger. Even their eyes had the white markings. They were really nice looking I might buy one tomorrow but I doubt it any clue what kind it is?

It says it is a wild oscar. Are they really wild Oscars or just another variety that was produced in captiviy?

Lots of people seem to be confused about this kind of oscar...including me:laugh: I beleive it is just a juvenile wild oscar(a wild oscar, from the wild:lol: ), however it looks alot like my zebra oscar...it's also similar to A.Crassipinnis.

Yes, also known as a green oscar, it will look similar to a tiger oscar when mature:)

mine looked a lot like that when it was young, actually, a little more lacey/patterned.

The only time it was close to being that pale was at the store and once in my tank when scared, otherwise quite dark.

Now it looks like a normal O, mostly black, orange spots, and occasionally shows the lighter pattern underneath.

I would have to see a grown one to believe it was a different type ...

usually it is just a case of a seller changing the name to induce sales or hike rates (sometimes both).

Who knows though, if they are working on genetics and breeding new lines ... just about anything is possible I suppose.

Looks like the next time I am in the market for an Oscar, there might be some new colors to choose from (in 10-20 years )
