TOPIC: My oscar sleeps? And what is this mystery bump?

My oscar sleeps? And what is this mystery bump? 2 years ago #96185

Idk if water parameters are necessary for this thread but I tested it anyway. pH is 6.8, ammonia is 0 ppm, nitrate levels are 15 ppm, nitrites are 0 ppm. Temperature is 78 degrees Fahrenheit.
Every night, my oscar lays down. It's like a process we go through every day! Haha When she lays down, I turn off her light and we go to bed! Lol Coolest fish ever!

I was curious if any one else's oscar does this!

Also, you might notice a bump on the left side of her head. It has been there her whole life and if anyone has an idea of what it could be, please tell me!

Chomp Chomp says thanks for your comments!

Hello, Tara.
It's pretty normal for oscars to lay down if they sleep and indeed they do sleep at night.
I tried to check you pics, but i can get them to work.
If you use photobucket and copy/ paste the imagecode we'll be able to see your fish and judge the lump you are talking about.

btw i hope and guess you got your nitrites and nitrates mixed up, for nitites should be 0, and nitrates kept at below 40, but 15 would be fine.
Did you switch the testresults???
If you did , your water is indeed in pristine condition!

How did I do that??? Lol Sorry! They ARE switched though. NitrITES 0 ppm and nitrATES are 15 ppm.
As for the pictures, let's try photobucket:
The first photo is of Chomp Chomp laying down if anyone wanted to see what that looked like. i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy156/hellof...ara/ChompLayDown.jpg
The second photo is just so people can see how beautiful she is! i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy156/hellofromtara/MissThang.jpg

Excellent picture, btw.

It's a great photo! Fabulous quality, much better than what my POS camera will do. LOL

As for the bump - it's hard to say. Mine has a small one on his tail, and I've watched it over the last year, it doesn't seem to affect him in any way. Do fish get moles I wonder? lol I just call it his "beauty mark".
If ignorance is bliss, why aren't more people happy?

Albinism (from Latin albus, "white"; see extended etymology, also called achromia, achromasia, or achromatosis) is a congenital disorder characterized by the complete or partial absence of pigment in the skin, hair and eyes due to absence or defect of an enzyme involved in the production of melanin. Albinism results from inheritance of recessive gene alleles and is known to affect all vertebrates, including humans. The most common term used for an organism affected by albinism is "albino". Additional clinical adjectives sometimes used to refer to animals are "albinoid" and "albinic".

YOU O HAS COLOURED STRIPES, SO CANNOT BE ALBINO, IMO.
every month there's a POTM thread, entrys can be sent upto the 15th of the month, voting till the end of that same month.

Oooh cause I always thought lutinos had black on the edges of their fins. Lol Albino or lutino, she's my baby! Usually red oscars are the prettiest to me, but when I saw this one in a petstore a year ago, I just couldn't resist! I named her Chomp Chomp because she always latches onto decorations and shakes like a dog!!! Hahaha

I always worried the bump was a parasite, but I have treated the water for parasites and nothing changes. It doesn't seem to bother her. As long as she is happy and healthy, I am not going to worry about it.

As far as a photo for a contest, the hardest thing would be to choose ONE! Lol Count me in though!

Chomp Chomp appreciates the compliments! And I guess there's no sense in swimming around if you're trying to sleep!
