TOPIC: Feeding roaches to Oscars

Feeding roaches to Oscars 2 years ago #96975

Hey peeps,

Just a question here...anyone here fed cockroaches to their oscars?

There's a roach farm quite close to me...and to me it makes sense to feed them to oscars. They are pound for pound prolly the highest source of protein on the planet, they clean (believe it or not), not as noisy as crickets, and cheap as hell!!

Depending of which roaches you want...i can get Pallid Roaches (about 2cm) for US$ 2.50 for 10 or US$ 3.85 for 20. (Image below)

Let me know what your opinion on this is please...and whether some of you are in fact feeding them to your O's.

Like i said...makes good sense to me feeding them considering the nutritional value of these critters. Unless there's cons about them that i dont know of...

roaches are one source of fish foods in the wild, thus
i don't see any reason why it should not be good for them.
i for one normally feed them to my fishes too. last night
i tried to catch a footage while my aro gulp one big
roach.... but i am an slow old man not able to do so or
perhaps my aro did it very fast

Damnit...screwed the code up with the pic on my post...thanks for fixing it Paul

Sweet...i thought as much, but wanted to get another opinion (that never hurts). Plus these are cultured on a roach farm so they are clean and healthy

As for not being able to video your aro eating...you have to stare at those beauties...coz if you blink your eyes...you miss everything!!

hmmm, dont think I could manage doing that....I have an insane phobia of insects, I have a hard enough time feeding crickets, I dump em and run. You should see me when one jumped back out, I ran screaming until hubby flicked it back into the tank...lol

But I will pick up the worm sometimes, and a pinky mouse...

What difference will feeding those with the wings do? Wings hard to digest or something?

roaches without wings are more meaty than the one with wings. those wings are
dead cell and hard to digest and my fishes are having a hard time swallowing
with expanded wings...

i know what you mean.... my eldest daughter do the same..... she would not react seeing a snake or big rats but will run fast and screaming whenever she see roaches....

i came across an article that in Taiwan they do raised roaches for pets
and for scientific study, maybe that is the reason.....

Re:Feeding roaches to Oscars 2 years ago #97257

I suppose they would be quite nutritious, but I for one do NOT want to keep them in the house, dead or alive. Can't stand 'em.

unfortunately, we can not get rid of them totally, thus, i gave
instruction to my househelp not to spray any insecticide at all.
just hit them with broomstick and throw then in in my tank....
