Ok i bought these guys about 6 months ago now, and by gcollins thread im a bit confused.
they were about 3cm when i got them, there in a 120g tank, the water temps allways 25 degees celcius, the water levels are ph 7, nitrates 10, ammonia 0, nitrite 0.
now 6 months later they are about 8 cm, growing so slow i cant even realise change.
My o's seem healthy but why arent they growing much, i give them about 2 worms a day, then the next i will give each a 1cmsq block of blood worms, the next, 1 dried shrimp, the next 2 crickets and a green pee. is that not enough food.

u can try hikari staple. its a good growth formula. Mine got really big from it really fast...it might work for you. Mine are not even a year and one is already pushin 10-11 inches.
Also dont feed just worms, bloodworms etc...not good. They need a steady diet of a GOOD pellet, and other foods need to be fed spaced out through the weeks every 2nd day or so. Or add it once if u feed 3 times a day, etc....

my two oscars are growing a inch a month, they are 4 inch at the moment, i give about 12 medium size pellets in the morning i put 6 in wait a minute or two then another 6, at about 6 in the evening i chop one prawn or you could give them 2 crickets each depending on the size, and their are so many different things you can feed, just make sure you give staple diet of pellets in the morning, hope this helps xxx

agree with mylutino most fish need a good staple pellet diet just like dogs or cats with the odd treat such as a little raw minced beef slightly thawed from the freezer

I feed my oscars a combination of pellet foods, live minnows, crickets, and frozen bloodworms. The high amount of protein (especially in the crickets) will promote growth.
My albino oscar has grown about an inch and a half in a little over a month on this diet I think something that is commonly over looked in feeding oscars, is that they need insects. In their natural habitat, they would probably be eating more insects than live fish, you can tell because they are not a long, aero-dynamic shape, which suggests that they only snack on fish every now and then, and are not designed to eat them as a main source of food.
This is not to say that oscars shouldn't be fed live fish, I am just trying to stress that oscars need a fair amount of insects and worms in their diet.

fair point tony if they needed to chase fish all the time they would be like a torpedo shape but I guess all they need to do is wait for insects to drop into the water hence they are a taller stubby sort of shape.

@albino tiger
I usually just drop however many they will take in a few minutes, 2 at at time, so I dont have to scoop anything out. I also drop pellets as they eat them for a few minutes so that there are no leftovers.
Then if you wanna add something special once a day or once every other day, throw in the crickets, worms, frozen blocks of mysis shrimp, krill, etc.... I know mine love crickets and meal worms, and red wigglers.
Just do it and u will see what they will accept, they may not take it at first so dont go dumping in a whole bowl of worms or anything like that!

we have pellets,
there called new life specrtum jumbo fish formula and they cost $45, so they should love them.
the tiger loves them, or anything for that matter, he eats anything i put in there including fingers
but the albino, not so much, in fact he eats hardly anything, he hardly competes, i think he is blind or something.
i can see the black one size increasing much faster as well.
Any way is that a recommended pellet choice, the pet shop thought so, but thats probably because it was the most expensive one in the shop

I feed Hikari Staple to my Oscars. they love them and growth is just over an inch per month. From my experience Red Oscars are more aggressive, eat the most, and grow the fastest... then Tiger O, then albino/lutinos.
