I was just wondering if a full grown oscar could actualy break the glass of a 75 gallon tank if they smashed into it hard enough ? I live upstairs and that would be my worst nightmare

I have heard of lots of fish being literal "tankbusters", like some bigger catfish, but i have not heard of an Oscar breaking out through the glass by himself.
My Oscars do know the exact parameters of the tank and i never even saw them hit the glass , although my SD's used to knock themselves silly on the glass when i just had them
Our fish don't grow too big, our tank becomes too small!

i agree with noddy i have heard of many different species of tankbuster like big cats, doviis, beanies and the likes but in all my years with south and central americans i have yet to hear of an oscar even comming close to breaking a tank.......
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

There is no way an Oscar could manage to crack the glass on an aquarium. Mind you, the way one of my Oscars was rattling a heater this afternoon, I reckon he'll break that before too long

I have heard on this site that some O's have rattled the glass lids to a point that their owners or keepers thought there drip trays would break. I ordered some glass from the local glaziers, the guy asked me if i wanted toughened or untoughened glass.
Toughened glass is about 50% more expensive so i opted for 6mm instead of 4mm hardened glass, Ooooh well maybe a bit much really as 6mm is very heavy even well i slkide it along the runners........ lol

hold on, there are some point to consider..... if you do have some small rocks
or pebbles in the substrate, yes, oscar can break the bottom plate of your tank.
my 14 inches oscar used to scoop and move the substrate and i have some rocks and
pebbles about more than an inch in size. when my oscar lift the rock upward and
release it there hitting the clear bottom plate, in no time, the water is rushing
out through the crack it created......

the point is.... if you do have substrate, never put a rocks or pebble that could fit
to the oscar's mouth or else you have a chance of breaking the bottom plate.

as o the oscar ramming to the glass wall.....not a chance.....

I have had Oscars off and on for the last fifteen years and I would have never thought that could break the glass either. I woke up about a month ago and my 55 had a U shaped crack toward the top of the tank. I don't have any decorations stacked up or anything else that I believe could be used to break the glass. The tank is about fifteen years old but I don't think that should matter it was in good shape. I have two 10 inch oscars that chase each other around and hit pretty hard from time to time. I'm puzzled as to how it broke?

Welcome to the site!

Glass weakens over time, and with them banging each other ,there's a good chance they just hit the right spot to cause it to crack.

Did you get a new tank?

Yeah, my boss had a 55 gallon with all the accessories and wasn't using it. She sold it to me for $100. Looks like a got a pretty good deal from pricing i saw on craigslist for similar set ups.
