You're not actually putting air into your tank, it is oxygen that fish need and is what your filter creates by the bubbles. Difficult to say what creates more oxygen, I suppose it really depends on your situation and what's you are using. If you have a large flow of water coming back into your tank causing a loss of surface agitation than that would be enough. However, if you only have a small filter that isn't creating much agitation then that probably would not create much oxygen, an air stone would probably be a good idea.

When fish don't have enough oxygen they either hang at the surface with mouths out of water, or they may hang around where the water comes back into the tank, they will probably breathe heavily as well.

Like Penn said...oxygen is transferred to the water from the surface...so filter agitation would seem to me to be far more important, and it sounds like you have enough to work fine.

If you do add a bubbler just dont put your too near the filter intake...I had a bubble wand that I placed about 2 inches below the intake tube and I kept getting air into the filter which would cause a ton of very tiny bubbles to circulate around the tank...which can look unsightly and/or like silt or bacteria.

It doesnt matter which, the most important thing is that the surface is rippled. Oxygen naturally goes into the tank. The larger a surface area the quicker/more oxygen gets in the tank. A rippled surface has a larger area than a still one, so as long as the surface is rippled then you are doing enough

Exactly.

Just like biowheels have folds to create more surface area for bacteria.
