Hey guys my Oscar is currently growing at a rapid rate and eating like a monster, I bought a new canister filter that cycles the tank about 4/half times an hour. I have noticed he produced more solid waste now something that would be impossible to be dragged up by the filter stream and big enough to stay on top of the gravel.

How do I handle this? I dont know if it is worth ripping out the gravel vac as most of the waste lies on top and cant enter the gravel. What I have been doing is scooping up whatever waste I see with my net every 3 or so days I have currently 0 issues with my Ammonia or Nitrate levels and the tank has been running for 3 weeks now and my readings are still pretty much sitting well with in the parameters.

Any other suggestions how I might handle this?

Thanks.

I use a power head to push anything on the surface to the filter intake... Just an idea!

The small floaty stuff is no problem and all the particles and stuff gets handled nicely by the filter, but sometime my Oscar if you excuse the term shits a brick and it drops like one to the bottom of the tank and I am worried if I leave it that it will push up my nitrates.

I see your point, but my 1300gph powerhead pushes it to the filter intake...

But as long as you keep up your weekly water changes, your Nitrates shouldn't be a problem!

Thanks, I might look at a cheapish powerhead and see if it works.

It is basically a internal filter that only pushes water something like a re-sun:

have not bothered to teach them to use the toilet. I have plumbed a small toilet into my tank and they use it too. No just kidding, i got the same as nicki and vac once a wk too.

gravel vac...I mean, that's pretty much what they're here for, although alot of the time (even though I have good suction), the larger debris will simply go halfway up the tube and then fall back out.

I have 2 nets, one large one for the fish (although I never take them out anyways),and a smaller one that I use to run gently across the surface. Since I use sand it picks up the debris but the grains are too small and flow through. It also evens out the sand and makes it look nicer, like how country courses rake their sand traps. I doubt it would work with gravel though since it would pick up the gravel as well.

my 230 gal tank uses 3 x 2400 power head as filter pump...
and i have no substrate at all... no matter how big are the oscar
waste, they all go with the suction and delivered at the canister jugs.
