I need to move my existing tank because that's where the new one is going
Thinking out loud here
Put fishes into a big bucket of their tank water (just in case some thing goes wrong) Drain and save the water from the old tank (leaving water in the sump) man handle the old set up ( easily done when empty)
out of the way (slide it futher down the wall ( plenty of room) making room for the new tank .
then quickly poor 1/2 water back in top up as per water change let it settle and add fish ?
or is there an easier way ?
I quizzed the 2 main lfs if they could baby sit my O and Pleco and no response
any advise ??
cheers Gaz

Moving tanks is worse than moving yourself across the country! (IMO)
LOL
Let us know how it goes. I need to do the exact same thing as you for the exact same reason!
I think this time, I have decided to set the current tank back up somewhere else, exactly was it is fish and all, and let the new tank cycle where it should be, then just plop the fish into the new tank in 4-6 weeks time depending on how long it takes to cycle.
When cycling a 240 gallon from scratch, what is the best method to get the process going, sans fish?

Are you going to use both tanks? Or are you moving all the fish from one tank to another???
If you are moving all fish to the new tank, then move the fish to the new tank, AND move your old filter from the old tank to the new tank. Let both the old filter, and the new filter run on the new tank for about a month... And this way you can move the fish to the new tank....

Another thought I had was to save water change water with good parameters from the old tank and add that to the new tank when cycling ?
ie: when doing water changes add the old tank water into the new
open to ideas on that one. Would there be any benefits ?
I'll explain : Drain new tank as per water change
then drain water from old cycled tank and add that water straight away to refill new tank
I've never tried this before so open to suggestions good or bad

Nicki-Sue...
I have had thoughts both ways. My current thought is to move the current tank (120g) to a new location before I set the new tank up. Put everything back to the way it is now.
Then setup the new tank (240G) in the spot where the 120G used to be, fill it, cycle it, then once cycled move everyone from the 120G into the 240G.
How best to cycle a brand new 240G as quickly as possible?

Gazza,
What sized tank are you going from to?
last year, I went from a 55 to a 120G using a lot of the same methods you described. However, last year, I attached my new filters to the 55G first, let them cycle, then switched to the 120G with fully cycled filters.

I can't swap filters the old 55gal uses a sump the new 175 gal will have one of those fluval fx 5 maybe 2 later when I can afford it lol
But I like your idea of cycling the new filter in the old tank

What kinds of filters did you have in the current tank? You could move the bio media into the FX5 if you have like bio-balls

2.5-3ft bio sump filter
I'd like to keep that as is and running
The 2 tanks will be side by side
You just never know who might need a temp home for her babies
