I have two established filters in my 55GAL tank a emperor 400 and a tetra. tetra will be replaced will be replaced with a fluval. Any tricks to jump starting the fluval with media from tetra (bio)?

Very nice. thats a great setup with the emperor. I use the same except I have a 305. What type of bio media were you using in the tetra? I had 2 emperors and transferred my media from one into the fluval.

Just filter pads with carbon. Same in emperor

Re: Kick start 1 year, 8 months ago #111560

I would get some fluval ceramic rings or something to add in...They fit in the extra media slots in the emperor as well. I transferred them from one of my emperors into the fluval. Depending on the size of the tetra you can definitely move some of the sponge/wool into the canister slot to get it started, although I would leave the carbon out. As I recall the tetra biobags have the option to remove the carbon and just pull out the wool. Either way you'll still be just fine with the emperor going.

johhny is right. Put the ceramic rings in the filter and dont bother with the carbon (save it until you need to remove some meds)

To get the bacteria growing just run the filter on the tank. If you are planning to take a filter off of the tank then i would wait for 6 weeks after adding the 405 before removing a filter

Im not sure what you mean by the filter return 'shakes'
