I was told today by a so called expert that if I run a sump system I would still need a canister as well to create enough water movement in the tank ??

Well from what i think i know about sumps is that they have pumps? i hope lol and they pump a rate of just an exaple 100 gallons per hour if you have a 20 gallon sump for a 55 gallon tank and the gph is only 100 then yes you would need another filter hope that helps. But wait to see what everyone else says, acording to that so called expert. Lol sorry ahead of time if anything i said was wrong.

You may want to condider a powerhead to get any debris and dirt in the right direction, but getting a canister in addition to the sump, would not be needed .

there 2 main types depending on what you need it for? i use one of these as a wave maker. I think i got it for £20 of ebay. very good, does the job well and does not use anywhere near as much power(electric) as a normal powerhead pump.

if you want it to supply the water to your sump then your better off with a pump type head like this. get the largest if you have a large tank. (3500L) cgi.ebay.co.uk/EHEIM-COMPACT-1000-POWERH...;hash=item2c507becb4

Gazza I am using a powerhead on my 850 litre Oscar tank. Its a Hydor Koralia 4, has plenty of flowing power and gives good circulation, I can recommend them for your purpose. I would stay away from the ones on eBay they are mud!, the dodgey knockoffs have a steel impellor shaft which basically rusts as soon as it touches water whereas the real deal have a ceramic shaft and are much better quality while using a tiny amount of power.
What I like is the fact you can move the powerhead to just the right angle to give good circulation aswell as water movement at the surface (I use this instead of an air pump)

Have a gander at this site www.aquariumproducts.com.au/powerheads.php
They are up near you in Qld, I got my 6ft twin light unit from them no problems plus postage is on $7.50 Australia wide regardless of weight.
