Custom stands over here in OZ quite often leave a gap of 5-10 mm between the tank and the section of base that covers the foam etc they then fill that gap with a silicone or gap filler
when the tank is in place effectively glueing /sealing the tank to the base

Their argument is it adds strength to the base of the sides of the tank

I have the option to do either on this stand and would be interested in your thoughts

Cheers Gaz

heres's a diagram

If the tank is made properly it wouldn't need added strength to the base.

My stands have been store bought and not custom but wouldn't it be just better to measure the stand for the tank and it do it right the first time?

Adding silicon sounds dodgy as if they are covering up their mistakes. Also what happens when you want to move you tank?

Nah not dodgy @ all it's purposely done like that

Bit of a pain to move agreed but most of the pressure on a tank is on the lower part of the side glass not the bottom

I was just wondering if any one else has tried it ?

My only thought would be that if the stand is wood sealing it would keep water out (the little bit that mite get in there)so as to not start any problems with the stand.
