Waiting on a pm about a 48"x15"x15" tank

Either way that's the size I've decided on to make into a sump (fit's nicely in the stand)

Was thinking of 4 divisions

if it was your decision what media and @ what stage would you use ????

I was thinking (painful I know )

stage 1 layered coarse sponge /finer sponge /filter wool /carbon in socks

stage 2 ceramic noodles

stage 3 bio balls

stage 4 return pump

But open to suggestions

cheers Gaz

The sump I have in my current set up is my first so any help appreciated

i would go with your idea. maybe even add some bio balls to the last one as well and site the pump up above it. if the last divider allowed water through the bottom it would travel through the last lot of media to the pump. this would give you max volume rather than a empty space.

Bugger thought I'd do a diagram and you messed up my plan already

but that's cool I appreciate it here's the diagram any way lol

So take the grate under the bio balls away

after your suggestion was thinking leave the one under the carbon but take the other one under the noodles away too

your thoughts

thanks Gaz

that looks fine as it is. how much media do you think will fit in there? possibly a lot more than needed anyway.?

I'd be guessing prob 1 maybe 2lt noodles maybe 3lt bio balls maybe more depend how big I make the chambers

thinking of gluing a stand off on the inlet side slightly higher than the sump and use bulkhead fittings for the feed water ??
Idea to give a bit more hand space come cleaning time ?

cheers Gaz

Good one, Marcus.
A lot of folks forget about that last chamber and do not use it for any media.
I got 3 thick slabs of filterfoam in there, and that will add quite a lot of surface for the BB.
I use lava rocks and other porous rocks to allow the Bacteria to grow on as main filter media.

The rest seems like a good idea.
I have the media you use in the first chamber added to my overflow, which is functioning as pre-filter.

and i've become biast to the use of carbon nowadays, because of the horror stories about HITH.
And my water actually doesn't smell bad at all.
