I posted before about a permanent W/C idea

But for those who don't have that option here's an idea i had I'll post pics tomorrow

Lets look at the options

Siphon into a bucket pain in the ass

Run a hose outside and suck till your head implodes trying to get siphon going

Or you could try this

What you'll need cheap as chips

1x 20/25 lt bucket

Ix 3/4" bulkhead fitting

standard garden hose

Ok get the bucket and as close to the base as possible (on the side wall) drill a 3/4"
hole

put bulkhead fitting through the hole and clamp it tight

leaving enough thread out side the bucket so you can screw a standard snap on garden hose fitting on ( the male one that usually go's on you tap)
click your hose on and run it outside

now use a short hose or your gravel vac being short getting a siphon going should be a breeze

Then siphon into the bucket next to your tank and the water will drain outside via the bulkhead no more stopping or hard sucking

Cheers Gaz

If you buy the FX5 canister you get this fitting already. I don't bother for some reason. guess I am nervous it may come off and flood the room. with the hose in the top I can leave it to syphon without thinking or watching it.

I attach my tank vacuum with the one way valve that you shake to get going to a very long hose out to the yard. When the water starts flowing I take the vacuum head off the hose and this works OK. There is too much nasty oscar poo in my water changes these days to risk sucking it along with my mouth...yuk, shudder

i use a 1/2" hose and the window is real close, so i got no problem there.
i tried a 1" hose before, and that allmost turned me into an aquatic creature, due to all the water i inhaled...

I use a vac on hose but very rarely have to suck. this is what I do.

store the hose with some water left in it. I loop mine like a rope.fit vac. VERY IMPORTANT keep the hose higher than the tank, and drop the vac in tank. make sure the vac is filled with water.(hold it upside down under water)

plug the hose end with a finger or bend the hose and hold tight. drop hose on floor and take end to the drain. remove finger and water runs. it syphons itself. I have sucked about 2 times in 3yrs.

ive never had to suck on the hose? i use a fitting which attached my gravel vac to the hose, put it in the water, water fills up the tube, then bit of shaking and it just starts sucking the water out, i just run it down the floor and out the door onto the lawn.

i used buckets once. and bugger doing that agian, lol

Gaz when people mention vac they are referring to this, it works.

I use 19mm tubing on the end of the gravel vac tubing then run it onto the lawn, no sucking on it needed. The valve in the vac starts the siphon, gravity takes it outside.
