TOPIC: Bio-Wheel Question..

Bio-Wheel Question.. 1 year, 8 months ago #116085

I just recently bought 2 used Emperor 400s, and both are still in very good condition.

Should i buy new bio-wheels for it? Or will the used ones be ok? Theyve been cleaned really well, and were always kept in great shape. They havent been used in several months, and are a dark color, but not in a bad way. Its no problem for me to get new ones, i just wasnt sure if it was necessary or not.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Typically, bio-media of any kind never need to be replaced unless they are torn, destroyed or damaged beyond use.
4xOscars
1xBlood Parrot
2xJDs (pair)
5xClown Loaches
1xPleco

265 Gallons (84x24x30)
36" T5 Light for shading, sunlight effects
300 Gallon rated Living Color wet-dry sump
3L of SeaChem Matrix + Bioballss, ceramic rings etc...
1xIvy for nitrate filtering

I am always looking for better ways to enhance the lives of my babies. Hit me up, let's chat about fish!

To be honest, in this case I would buy new wheels. I always recommend giving the used filters a good clean and replacing all media before putting it in the tank--even if it was just one you previously employed that hadn't been in use for awhile.

Replacing the bio wheels definitely wouldn't hurt.

Here is a discussion on bio-wheel filters, you may or may not find it useful...

Actually that discussion did help me out quite a bit. I had just recently also purchased a new penguin 350, and im glad to know im not the only person having those problems with it. When i first set the 350 up, it worked great for about the first week or so, then the wheels started screwing up just as noted in that discussion. Im def glad i didnt buy 2 more 350s like i had originally planned...im glad i stuck with the emperor 400s instead

In that case if you bought the emperors used...replacing the wheels is definitely a good idea. As was mentioned in the article they tend to slow and stop occasionally, and yes the spray bars on the emperors will help immeasurably, however used biowheels will still have some gunk on them, and since the bacteria will be dead anyways and be of no benefit, might as well start off fresh. Just thoroughly clean the filter interior...making sure to clean the impeller and he impeller housing in some tank water with an unused scrubber. I dont know if you obtained the wire bristle scrubbers that come with the emperors new...so best idea is go go to the store and buy a small dish scrubber with hard bristles and only use it for tank cleaning. It also works well on glass and decor surfaces.
