Hei there!

Before I was planning to get the commercially available tank measuring L-48", W-18", H-24". Now I'm thinking to have a custom one measuring L-72", W-18", H-18".

Now the question:

L-72" - I know it's enough length for an adult oscar fish to swim.
W-18" - Is this enough for him to effortlessly turn around with this width?
H-18" - Is this height enough for an adult oscar? should I increase it more? if yes, by how much?

Honestly, I prefer tanks with longer length but with smaller width and height.

Thanks.

i am sure custom made tanks are more money than commercially available ones. A 125 gallon is 72longx18widex22high. Prob get a good deal on a used one on craigslist
I have no idea why the water bill is so high

Ok Capt. Dave. Follow up question. Will a 48" x 18" x 24" (approx. 75G) tank be a good one for oscar to swim around. I know that 75G is alright, I'm specifically referring to it's dimensions. Thanks.

looks a little odd to have 72x18x18
I had a 46x18x18
and a 72x24x24
I think height is not all the problem width and length can let the tank looks better

Thanks Capt.

Engmuk,

I think it's odd too. That's why I do ask your opinions first. I just came across my mind because I want longer lengths, but shorter width and height for my tank. Thanks by the way.

yap 18for height is alright but for a 6 feet tank it will be odd to have 18 width
but you can save cost a little for the thickness from the glass tank
my is half inch thick glass for the my 72x24x24 it seems strong enough
I am planning for a 4feet height 4 feet width and 8 feet long tank at very first but
while checked for tank safety it's not so safe depend on type of glass and very much on the thickness and in the market here I can't find a 1 piece of 4x8 for 1 inch thickness it need to be special ordered which will cost so much extra

If i were you i would go for the 6ft tank, i would go for 2ft high and 2ft deep but this depends on budget. It doesnt cost much more to have a tank 2ft deep(front to back) instead of 18inches. However when you go higher the tank can cost a lot more. When i got my 180g it nearly doubled the cost to go from 2ft high to 2.5ft high. I went with 2ft high
I can't get no sleep

hey delboybully, glass is not that expensive here.... an 24 inches high
would not cost too much that an 18 inches...

@yaiba, if there would be no limitation on the weight load in your
location, i would rather go for a good swimming space..6 x 24 x 24
will be a best option... plus.. if you decide to have an aro later on
that would be an idea dimension for an aro tankmate...

Paul, what i was trying to say is that its height that costs the money, not width. the reason its height that cost is the higher that tank, the thicker the glass needs to be

And it depends on budgets

yeah, i fully understand that db, i am just reacting based n my
standard perception... in my case, whenever tank exceeded 5 ft long,
the glass should always be not less than 1/2 inch thick...irregardless
of height...whether 15 inches or up to 24 inches.... because i always
consider the expansion load.... and water pressure... plus the weight...

ya the thickness says the prices, when you have a 72x18x18 you're almost there most probably using half inch glass so might as well be 72x24x24, prices going higher when the glass get thick. I dunno how they calculate 2 piece of quoter inch can be cheaper than 1 half inch glass
