I have my Oscar in a 244LT tank. It is 48" long 18" wide and 18" Deep. from what Ihave read in all the forums this would be too small, but it looks huge. What is a good size tank for an Oscar.

that is basically around 65 gal tank... good enough for your oscar....
but having big tank with poor filtration is also useless.... same is true
with having over kill filtration but very small tank... either way
tank size and filtration should always go hand in hand coupled with
good water maintenance...

btw, welcome on board

You could look at it this way. There is a minimum size that we recommend, but not a maximum size. Personally, if I was starting all over again, I would keep on Oscar in a 75 gallon tank. However, many agree that 55 UK gallons is the absolute minimum. However, go as big as you want, I'm sure your fish would love that.

bigger is better, minimum is 55g, but 75g for one oscar is better as its easier to maintain and gives your fish more room

Your tank may look huge, but oscars get massive. You really need to see a full grown one to realise just how big they get. Once your is full sized you will realise why they need big tanks!

bigger is always better when it comes to Oscars.

I think a more interesting way to look at the question is this:

When considering tank size, what is the best dimensions style to consider to optimize the Oscars environment?

example:
tall vs long
deep vs shallow
etc.......

when i was handling fishpond... for growing up fishes, deep water is always
an advantage but for production of blob as fish food, shallow but wide area
is always necessary....

with respect to tank, lateral swimming surface is always an advantage.
that is wide area...not necessarily deep...

Like was mentioned before, width is a big consideration. A 55g is doable but you will find it gets really tight as the oscar matures. 75 is ideal as the best 'smallest' size tank for an oscar. Tank size can be deceptive for new owners when they see such a small youngster in the tank--it's amazing how quickly they will grow and how big they can get.

I live up to my signature.
Better think big.
This will keep maintenance level down and will keep your oscar happy!
