Hi guys

I want some comments on the tank I am currently setting up. The tank will only house one Oscar and I can't wait to get him/her. I also hope to buy my Oscar whilst he/she is young (approx 8-10cm).

Basically, I have a 120cm long x 43.8cm deep x 49.3cm tall tank. It works out to be 259L or 68.376 US Gallons. I know this is on the smaller side but the tank was given to me by a friend before he went overseas (luckily).

I have already got a heater which is a Jager 3607 200W. On the box it says it is suited for a 300-400L tank so I think this will suit the tank well (i'll just keep an eye on the temp).

I have also got a Ehiem 2217 filter. This cycles a maximum of 1000 L/H and is suited for a 180-600L tank. I think Im safe with this too.

SO my questions are:
- Is the filter going to be OK for one Oscar ??
- Is the heater going to be OK for my tank ??
- What sort of lighting do I need to run for one Oscar keeping in mind that im going to be having no plants ?? What sort of bulbs ?? Single ?? Double ??

Any feedback is welcome. If if its Ok let me know. If its not let me know also.

If I have anymore questions i'll post them up

Thanks

Josh

Your plan sounds great! You will be fine with that heater, and the filter sounds great! One thing with Oscars is you can never have too much filtration.

Lighting is a personal choice, really your Oscar doesn't need light at all. But the light is there for us to see the fish...

I run singles in all my tanks... But that is just because that is what I had at the time!

The one word of caution I will give you is to MAKE SURE your lid is heavy and cover as much of the top as possible... They can and will jump out!

Thanks Nikki--Sue for your reply and I will make sure my lids are weighted down

Nikki--Sue would you run a double fluro if you had one ?? I have heard that Oscars dont like alot of light. Is this true ??

What sort of bulb are you running on your current single light ??

I would and have run a double! i have also run a double T- light in the past and that is a LOT of light...

Oscars are very adjustable.. The adapt although they often pout!

If that is what you have, that is what I would use!

hello. sounds like a nice setup for one Oscar.

I think your setup is good. Add a 30-60 gallon HOB filter to your setup. Its cheap and it will do wonders in combination with your Canister.

Thanks for the info guys !! Many thanks

I think i'll get a double fluro light with independant switches so I can always turn one off if need be.

I have another quick question. Do you guys place you heaters near your filter intake or near the spray bar/outlet ??

almost all covered. I had heard some of the people said Oscar sometimes tend to break the heater, I don't have that problem since I don't heater here as weather here is suited for Oscar. also if a heater are placed I think it's better to be placed near filter intakes warmer temperature help to grow the bacteria, in additional you can put UV light filter just right before spray bar it's good!!

I have triple fluro's in my Jebo tank. One blew not long after I set it up. Only one currently runs. Unless you want to keep plants, you dont want or need too much light. Too much light means algae. yuk

Eheim 2217 Classic is a quality filter, it will be fine for your tank. These things have been selling for 20 years alongside the updated Pro models so they must be doing something right. I have on of these and I love it. Advanced simplicity

Heater is fine too, usually your heater should be 1 watt per litre of tank water, Jager heaters are rated 1 watt per 3 litres. I run a Jager 300watt on my 850 litre tank with no problems at all even in the winter (mind you the has 12mm thick glass and this is a good insulator.)

Lighting is personal taste but I have a 24hour timer in mine so I don't worry about turning it on or off its on automated cycle.

that set up would be good for an o... though some people would say
the tank is too bare when the fish is still juvenile.... that is when
hobbyist tend to overstock.... go ahead and set it up....
we can't wait for your inputs when it is running already ....

and be afflicted with MTS later...
