TOPIC: Sand vs Filters

Sand vs Filters 4 years ago #12919

Ive change my tank from gravle to sand not to long ago. its nice but now my filter seems to be suffering now. week after i did it it started to humm really bad. i worked on it and fixed it but a week later it went back to what it was doing. So i was wondering if u guys fround a way to make filter ok with sand or a filter that works ok with it. i have a Penguin BIO-Wheel 350 Power Filter. i want to upgrade to a canister filter but money is tight right now. is there a way to prolong this one or tips what to look at for future use thanx.

you have to make sure the intake on your filter is not to close to the bottom of your tank. if sand gets into the filter it will slowly wear away at the impeller and this will cause the humming or grinding sound you might hear. im not sure if replacement impellers are available for the penquin (they are for the aquaclear filters) but you can get try changing it out and see if that helps.

eventually the finer particles of sand will get vacummed up so the amount of dust your fish kick up will deminish(sp?)
