Hi Oscar fans,

I have had 2 oscars since xmas 2007, but my tank (see below) split and i need to replace it.

I have found a replacement but want to make sure my 2 oscar's and the oscar and the pleco that come with the tank will all fit in and have a happy life.

The old tank (top picture) was 1275x620x380.

The new tank (botton picture) is 1220x450x380.

A little smaller i know, but they did seem to have plenty room in the old tank, So i think the new tank will be fine.

What do you think before i go out and blow £150.
This is my last resort, otherwise i will have to give them up.

Many thanks
Jason.

P.S. I know for sure the new oscar is female, but am not sure what sex my original 2 are. If they start to breed i'll be back for more help on breeding tips.

Here's hoping

Sorry I dont think its going to work.. the new tank will take a smaller tank mate or 2 but not 2 more oscars + plec.. you will be changing water every few days.and it will be cramped.the new tank works out to be around 50gallons.

Im afraid it isnt going to work, that tank is about 46 uk gallons/55us g. Its not really enough for one oscar.
You would of struggled in the old tank when they were full grown
If i was you i would look at 75 uk g tank and just keep your 2 oscars

Have you thought about fixing your old tank.
If it is the seal that has gone, then just empty it, dry it out, clean with some meths, then reseal over the top of the old sealant with aquariums sealant. Leave to dry for 2 or 3 days to be sure. The joints will look a little large and probably a bit messy but it wouldnt cost much

You can temporary house your oscar in a large container with the filters and heater running on it

to be honest in order to comfortably house 3 oscars and a plec you will be looking at a tank in the 125+ gallon range. personally i would try to reseal your old tank and start looking for a bigger one if you plan on keeping all three oscars
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

Hi Delboybully, Thanks for your tip on fixing my tank, i have got a new piece of laminated glass to reinforce the bottom which cracked and i have so far used 2 tubes of aqua sealant, the tank is still out side drying off. You also left a contact number for Windsor aquatics on my other post in buy/sell/swop under heading free to a good home. I have visited their web site and asked for a quote. Do you have a picture of the tank they made for you? Would be nice to see the end result and maybe speak to you direct, if possible, to make sure i'am asking them for the right things.

Many thanks again.

Hi All oscar lovers,

Success!!

I have repaired my tank, no leaks so far, fingers crossed, touch wood, etc etc,

Tank is now back inside, filled, decorated, first start treated and warming up.

i'am leaving it for 24 hours or so, to allow it to cycle through. Will this be enough time? It's fairly urgent that i get my fish back into the tank, as i have only got one filteration set up, which is doing the main tank now. Will they be ok in about 6 gallons in a tempery bucket for a day. They have been quite happy in there with a heater and filter for a week so far.

Thanks for the help

As i understand it, you have had the pump running all the time ...thats good.. the bad thing is all your water will be new so it will not start to recycle straight away and will take a bit of time to work(WKS)..you can buy some quick start( its like a gel, like frog eggs)and works in 2days...I cant remember the name of the stuff though.... I would test your water everyday and make 30% water change if ammonia or nitrite appear on your test.keep testing everyday for 2wks...dont feed them much... as you had to repair your tank its not your fault and you've done well so far.KEEP CHECKING your water, you should be ok,make sure you treat new water with tap safe.As for keeping them in 6gallon with no filter.. again dont feed them and check the water for ammonia and nitrite, change it if any readings appear. If you have stress coat use it and have some yourself by the sounds of things.. good luck.

Im glad you have fixed your tank. I thought you had a little leak, I didnt realise it had cracked.

I have been promising to gets some pics for months, i will get a move on with it.

I have had the tank for over a year now with no problems, so i can recommend windsor aquatics, the bloke who runs it is a real nice bloke and they were the cheapest!!!!! But if you have fixed your tank do you need a new one?

It is really easy to order, he asks you what sort of fish you are keeping (fresh or salt), and if you want any holes or weirs and also if you want cover glass, he does the rest however if you want to speak to me send me a email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Hi Delboy,

Thanks for your reply, i have now fixed my tank and it's up and running with my fish back in it.

So, no at the moment i won't need a new tank. I did how every get a price from windsor aquatics. Very quick and professional and cheap.

Would like to see some pic's of your set up some time.

I have also added a plec and an air brick today to try and keep the glass a bit cleaner and better airation of the water. Looks good and more inportantly the wife is happy i only spent £30 fixing it rather than £300+ on a new tank.

Thanks to you and everyone who replied with idea's and pointers for me.

Hope i can as helpful to someone else one day.

Thanks again
Jason.
