These are the type I use in my tanks. Never had a problem

I have a 150g tank and use 2x300 watt fluval Tronic heaters. there are 2 things you need to consider.
1st what if the heater fails and you have only 1, you may not notice antill too late.
2nd what if the heater gets stuck on and keeps heating.
To cover 1st problem I use 2 heaters incase 1 gose down. I use 300watt as this should be how to be left on max without over heating my tank.(yes 2 300w would overheat but its not likly both will go wrong together. 3nd 2 heater heat both sides of tank evenly. the 2 problems I listed can and do happen. heaters break and get stuck on full heat so bear this in mind. As to makes, there are many good ones and the price will affect your choice too.Mine have worked for 5yrs without fault. I think this is the best option with pumps also. 2 are better than one big 1. hope this has been of some help

i also used 2 300 watt heaters in my tank.one at both ends. i went one step further and bought shatter proof heater because oscars well can be oscars(bought them at petsmart). this for me is no longer a problem because since the purchase i have installed a sump so now my heaters are in there.

I agree that 2 heaters are better than one, i see the second one as a back up in case the first fails

Also get the biggest ones you can. A bigger heater on a short time works more efficiently and cheaper than a smaller heater on a long time. Some types of heater are designed so that when they go wrong and fail they fail off
