i have a fluvel 404 canister filter that rattles alot and allso makes a loud noise when turned on or off. i have managed to stop the rattle once but have no idea how i did it. does any one know what might be causing this? i do pump the air out and i have even tried shaking it so more air comes out but this does not make it quiet.

any ideas??

ok sounds like an easy fix. will order up a new shaft and see what happens.

I had a similar problem a few years back. When i inspected the impeller the shaft in the middle was broken. I replaced the shaft and bingo everything was fine again. The impeller may not be broken but worn. A word about impellers in fluvals (and other filters). It is a good idea to take them out and clean them (i do it everytime i clean the filter but you can leave it longer) and the housing for them otherwise they can get blocked up and stop working
