As I got to convince my mum that I am capable in keeping an oscar, I am quite interested to know the time for basic cleaning that I need to care for the oscar and the tank of about 60 gallons weekly.
Tell me the max and min time please, like 1.5 hours etc.

welcome to OFL

It's good to see people are asking sensible questions.

The most important thing to bear in mind is not to overstock a tank. Adhering to this rule play huge part in how often you have to carry out tank maintenance. Also, installing suitable filtration will also contribute to how clean your tank stays. So if you don't overstock, and have got good filtration, you'll probably only need to do a water change once a week.

I would suggest doing a water change once a week, even if you have got a fairly large tank, getting into a routine is a really good idea. If you don't have a routine, it's very easy to forget to carry out maintenance which can obviously lead to problems.

thank you, but i have never tried water changing before, so how about how long it takes to change like 25% of water?
and apart from water changing, what are the other tanks of fish weekly maintainence?

It depends on how you do it. There are two ways that you can do a water change, the traditional way is using buckets, the easier way is using a hose pipe or Python. Using buckets is very time consuming, using a hose pipe makes the job very easy and relatively quick.

what are the other tanks of fish weekly maintainence?

I have no idea what you are asking me here

Keeping fish in a suitable environment, i.e. the correct tank size and filtration. Regular tank maintenance so that your water quality is always good. And a healthy diet. Keeping fish is not rocket science, anybody can do it, you just have to remember you are looking after a living creature, they cannot be neglected or ill treated.

This is what really annoys me, people seem to think that fish can just be left to their own devices. They need care and attention to survive.

yer, i won't buy an oscar unless i have everything prepared especially the water cycle.
do u need to check the water quality (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, ph) everyday?
i found a tank of about 300L and it is about 250 pounds, is it a resonable price?

Hello Joe,
I've been reading the Thread and I think this is topic I can help with. As I am a new boarder and this is OLF's site anything I advise and is Overriden by OFL, your first option should be to listen to the web master. First off let me begin by saying it is extremely important to not over stock your tank as OFL has already stated. So since you say you have a 60 gallon tank or there abouts, 1 Oscar is all you can put in there and have a healthy fish with minimal maintanence. I am going to give you some info to go by from my personal experience, to help you start. As I'm sure you are looking for some specifics. and some of the info that you get from the vets(OFL) can be a bit overwhelming. (cont. next post)

on a 60 gallon tank you would probably be looking at a once a week water change of 25-30% and a vacumming of twice a week. the vacumming would probably take about15 mins and the water change should be no longer than 45 mins. as for water testing as soon as the tank is properly cycled you should only have to test your water every week until you have your routine down then only once a month or so.

as was mentioned earlier dont overstock your tank and make sure you have really good filtration and the tank maintenance can be kept at a minimum.

btw welcome to the site and good luck with your oscar.

for a 60 gallon tank i would go with a canister filter. fluval and eheim make the good quality canisters for oscars. if you go with a canister try to get one that is rated for twice your aquarium size.
if you want to go with hob fiters aquatech make the best for using with oscars. on a 60 gallon tank i would go with 2 aquaclear 70s

as for pricing in the uk i cant help you there however there are many member from that area on this site and im sure someone will bee able to point you in the right direction
