Hi
Actually I just quit using carbon myself about 2months ago.
In substitute for the carbon, I bought lots of those ceramic beads with the holes in them.
Never tried the bio-balls but I am sure they work just as good in creating more bacteria in your filter.

Hi
I have 2 tanks. A 75 gallon and 110 gallon.
I use the Aquaclear 110 powerfilters. I have a couple of them and I use the bio beads in all of them.

Hi
No don't ever rinse them out. What I do is rinse my tank media in the fish tank water. That way I'm not taking any bacteria away.
I don't buy new bio beads. I have kept the same bags for a long time now.
There's no need to ever change them.

Hello there! I have a 125 gallon size tank and I made some modification in my filtering system. I bought submersible pump usually used in a decorative fountain display. Using it as a suction point, connect it with a flexible hose going to an overhead filtering box to catch all dirt and food waste over it. The flowing water aerate the system, thus, eliminating the needs for air pump. Believe it or not, the water is always crystal clear for a long time, no need to replace it every now and then. I just keep adding water to replace the losses due to evaporation, and wash or replace the filter elements once a month. Scrub the glass wall occasionally and let the system do the cleaning. Of course, make sure you applied vitamins and anti fungus treatment from time to time to keep the fish healthy
