Canister filter is a filter that clean the water, but how does it suck the water in and pump it out again?
Does it in some ways related or connected with the airpump?
Or just a water pipe haning in the tank and another to such water up to the filter, and individual airpump which have no connection with canister filter?

a cansiter filter has an inlet and outlet pipe that circulates water to help in the removal of waste and harmful toxin.

an air pump is a seperate thing that pump air into the tank to oxygenate the water.

it looks like a bucket with a lid on, or large tub with 2 hoses coming out the top. It sits under your tank hidden away. one hose goses in one side of your tank and this will suck( syphon) water out the tank, other hose goses the other end of your tank and pumps water back in. within the bucket is a pump and media, foam,or blocks that trap all the crap. The flowing water creates oxygen, this creates bacteria and breaks down your fish poo.if you picture in you head a closed bucket with 2 hoses in top thats it. A canister filter.

Hi,

I have installed a canister filter for my Oscar tank. I need to know if I can now stop using my air pump. Will the canister filter be good for air pumping also? I am using a Dolphin C-700.

Also the pipe through which water comes back into the Tank after filtering , has this pipe to be above the water surface or it can be under the water surface.

Please do tell me , since this is the first time I am using an external filter.

Also I have under gravel filters, should I remove these or let them be.

Thanks

Gaurav

air pump can be left as is to oxygenate the water.

Its up to you. I have a canister but still use a air line. this gives the water a little more movement so dose oxygenate the water as paul says. I hate the bubbles that the air line gives off, bout find without the air line i get a oil type look on the surface and this looks worst. the oil i think is a by product of the high protein foods and is harmless.

it is not really appropriate to ask about angelfish in a oscar forum, but i just find no one to help me.
I am planning to have a pair of angelfish, a pair of cory in a 20g tank, and i think i am using a canister filter.
Does the canister filter provide oxygen??
Does a medium size airstone provide enough oxygen for the fish?

the best option is to point your outflow from your pump at the sureface. this will make small waves and brake up the sureface.the pump or airstone dont produce oxygen but the movement on the sureface that these items create help the fish breath easier and hence help fish produce more oxygen. Its sureface movement of some kind you want. hope that helped you.
