the list of filter that can be used is a long one. for hob filters aquaclear make in my opinion the best by far. for canisters fluval and eheim are reknown for there quality and dependability. it all depens on your pocketbook when it comes to filters. as a rule of thumb for any large cichlid fro hobs you should have 10 times your tank volume in gallons per hour flow, for canisters 4 times tank volume and sumps 3-4 times tank volume. on my oscar tank i have 3 aquaclear 110 (each rated at 500 gph) a fluval 404(rated at 350 gph) and a 40 gallon sump(pumping 950 gph).that works out to 2800 gallons per hour in theory and its on a 190 gallon tank. one thing to remember is that you can never have too much filtration with oscars or too big a tank
if you are looking for a relatively inexpensive canister you can check out the rena xp3. they are solid little filters that are in my opinion underrated
