i was at my local marine warehouse this weekend and i saw some hob filters made by aqua clear that flow 500 gph and was wondering if two of these would be enough for my 75 gallon tank and if they would have the bio filtration i need

What is the exact make?

I would say that two of them would be okay for a 75 gallon tank, that is not particularly big

they are aqua clear 110 the rating is for tanks up to 110 gallons and they flow 500 gph i would be using them with my magnum 350 canister that will give me 1350 gph in a 75 gallon i cant decide between them and going to two marineland c360 canisters two of those would give me 720gph they both have great bio filtration any suggestions i want as little maintnence as possible lol

If you are able to get two canister filters on your tank, that would be my preferred filtration. Everybody raves about hob filters and how good they are. I have to hold my hands up and say I've never used one because they don't sell them in the UK. Having said that, I did buy a little 2 gallon tank a few years ago, it's probably more for kids. That did have a hob filter built-in, although a very miniature version so I am well aware of the workings of one of these filters. Personally, I don't think the mechanical filtration is good enough if you take into account how messy Oscars are. You really want to be using filtration that will actually remove the very large particles of waste. A small filter is not going to do this efficiently. This is where canister filters come into their own when used on large aquariums that contain large fish that produce extremely large deposits of waste.

I know that some people will disagree with me. I think these filters are much better off being used on small community tanks that contain small to medium-sized fish. You get what you pay for, all the hob filters I have found on the Internet are all very cheap. I'm afraid you don't get good quality equipment for the price that these filters are going for. If you want a really good quality filter that will last for years you've got to pay for it. That is why Eheim filters are so expensive, however, you get what you pay for, that is good quality filters that give you years of trouble-free filtration

Maybe my statements on this thread is going to open up a can of worms, quite frankly, I don't care, I'm entitled to my opinion;)

Eheim are arguably the best canister filters on the market. Obviously you would have to test every single filter to actually make that statement stand, however I've use canister filters made by Eheim ever since I first started keeping fish and I've never had a problem with them breaking down. I hope that is not my famous last words?

When you read the description for filters, nine times out of 10 it will tell you exactly what the filter is rated for. For instance, I have two Eheim 2028 canister filters on my 125 gallon tank, each one is rated up to 130 gallons. I run two of them and they keep the tank extremely clean of both toxins and debris, and I've got white sand so it shows up very easily. Of course it's not going to remove every single bit, but you'll be really surprised to see how clean my tank is that the end of seven days. It's all down to having very powerful filtration either end of the tank. If you only have one canister filter, I would suggest putting in some kind of power head at the other end of the tank so that you'd actually push all the debris towards the canister outlet.

I agree, if you can go for canister do it.

I keep my tank water conditions in check (145USgal, 121UKgal) with three AquaClear 110 (500GPH*3), they require intense maintenance (I have a planted tank with Oscars and Severums, so go you get the picture in intake clogging issues) but I recently added a UV sterilizer (might be subjective but water looks clearer than ever).

The only reason I went for HOBs is that my tank is at floor level, propperly leveled (achieved in my second attempt, after reading that leveling aquarium article here at OFL), resting under 3/4" thick cork-sheet.

Whenever that tank is placed in its stand, I will go for a Wet/Dry sump and Canister filtering combination. Good thing about AquaClear is that, despite its "old-tech" design, they are quite flexible in the media we can use with them, easy to repair... and for seeding extra sponges for upcoming tanks they are great!

Good for you! I'm really glad you're pulling this one out! Maybe you could keep your filtering as it is right now, I like using different types of filtration since, despite maybe not being cost/effective, usually complement quite well in terms of good-to-excellent filtration!

Way to go Joe!
