I find the best way is a standard white light, one of those bulbs with a red tinge and a moonlight bulb (bulb),these three light the tank up lovely. However you do need a tank with the depth to have all these lights or you will find algae grows too much
I can't get no sleep

I wish delboybully uploaded a pic showing his lighting arrangement. Do you have a trhee-strip light fixture?

Since oscars seem to like low lighted tanks I've been using a bronze-amber coloured glass to filter/dim the standard fluorescent lights. I recently added a bit more light and raised the WPG from 0.33 to 0.7WPG, but that raise is only at the mid-zone of the tank.

Joe please post what solutions you are trying. This is an interesting subject for me.

currently i have a just a 48 inch single bulb fixture but was wanting to make my tank look nicer and my fish pop out a lil more and look there best did you add the more light because you have some plants in your tank and i was thinking of puting alight misting of brown or black paint on the glass where my light sits to dim the light a lil
