hi guys im hoping to set up a 4ft tank, and i was thnking are sponge filters adequate if i have many, i was thinking having a 600/l/p/h canister and a few of them in there. i have seen heaps in the pet shops.
i was just wondering as well, whats the most efficient and cheapest way to make one. has anyone got any tips or success in DIY sponge filters?
thanks! would love to hear ur ideas.

if you mean to use the sponge as a biological element in your cannister the only downside i can see if that they would clog rather easily in an oscar tank. if you are looking for an inexpensive bio media i would recommend using nylon scrubbies that you get from the dollor store. these give the ample surface area and are relativly inexpensive. i use them as a bio media in my sump filter. i clean them in tank water once every 2 months and have had no problems as of yet(its been 14 months now)

naw it wasnt for the canister actually.
iv heardu need an airstone and a sponge, and a tube. the air bubbles displaces water and draws water into the tube, and u put sponge aroudn so it collects gunk.

in some instances, you can use synthetic fiber that is being
used in making quilt. it is cheaper and easy to clean. see below

oh yeh i see that.
i think for now im gonna make 4 box filters each with carbon in it and filter wool. each will cost i reckon aobut 7 dollars each.
do you reckon having 4 box filters and a 600 l/p/h ehime canister will be ok for a 85 gallon tank? or am i really pushing the limit there.

nah, you are just being creative. more filtering phase
make your system effecient. if the first stage is clogged,
it will just flow to the next stage and so on.... just give
provision for free flowing in case the filter got clogged. this
is to avoid over work for the pump itself.
dont you know that setting the filtering box at the end of discharge
point make your system effecient, reduce the power consumption, and
give you ease in cleaning.
