Here's a strange question...and before anybody freaks out..NO..it didn't happen to me or anyone I know...I'm just curious cause my wife asked me this the other night...what would happen if while you were cleaning your tank..or feeding...whatever...your hood light fell into the water of the tank while it was lit(God forbid !!!) ??? Would the fish be harmed ? Lightning hits small bodies of water without harming the fish...so what would happen in this instance ?

since your tank ia make of glass and glass is an insulator nothing but tripping the gfi should happen. since the tank is not grounded there should be no harm to the fish.

i have had my oscar break a heater in my tank and i never notice until i was vacumming on day a got a little touch of hydro cause i was grounded
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

my goal is simple a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all

when the wiring of my powerhead got cracked and exposed
the wiring, i just get grounded. but the fish remains okey.
i could imaging that is more serious than the hood colapse on
the water. what danger it may pose is the chemicals and glass
of the bulb has.

i use a large mister in my outdoor pond with koi in it the mister/smoker vibrates electricly charged ceramic plates together to produce a water vapour like smoke ,the unit is completely submersed in the pond and if you put your hand in the pond when its switched on there is no reaction to yourself or the fish ..but if you touch the water jets that raise out of the surface of the pond you get a tidy bump off them...grounding and earthing i guess

just that happened to me, while cleaning the tank i pushed the hood in, and the light fell into the tank. at the time i had 2 large tinfoils and 2 bala sharks. i know the hood fell on one of the tin foils (or at least close to it)and all the other fish im pretty sure were on the other side. in the end, i lost 1 tinfoil and 1 bala shark. and im pretty sure they were electrocuted.

as for the tank being grounded, if it is not grounded, i would think the fish would be in danger. if it is grounded theres much less of a chance of shock.

I usually do maintenance in barefoot. I have had my share with electricity by picking up lamp assembly falling into my tanks -once it happened twice in my Angelfish tank. A four letter word and then a good laughter.

Good thing in Santo Domingo it's 110ac instead of 220ac. It's better to be careful though, nasty accident can happen in the most stupid ways.

The sure way I figure fish might be harmed is if they serve as conductors between the hot and neutral wires. I figure most tanks are not electrically grounded.
