Should I put a devider in the tank and turn the extra space into a sump filter or should I put the filter in a seperate hole on the ground in front of the tank.

Explaination (the above will not make sense with out this.):
The tank is actually an indoor pond with the demensions 11' long 3' deep 3' wide. The total amount of gallons is 740 but because I was considering puting a 65 gallon sump filter in with a devider I subtracted that amount. The pond is going to be right next to a patio, so my question is should I put the filter inset into the patio with a cover over it? The cover being so i can still use that area as patio space.

I would probably approach this project as is if you were building a pond rather than a tank. If I was you, I would look at the sort of filtration that koi ponds use. That is a lot of water to heat, normal tank filters only go up to around 400 W, you're going to need a few of those. Alternatively, get a pond heater. Here's a link that will give you a good idea of how to go about things.

Keep the filters separate from the tank.

personally I wouldn't bother with the sump idea. with what you have a Koi type pond filter would give far more flexibility, with as many box filters as you would like to add. you just need to find a place to hide them.

Let other people give you some advice before you commit yourself. What I will do is try and get my mate to come on here, his job is constructing ponds and he really knows his stuff. What he doesn't know about building large ponds isn't worth knowing and he will point you in the right direction.

i just want to find out if your pond is concrete embeded
to the ground or excavated soil to hold water in it?

filtering system in soil excavated pond is different from
concrete enbeded pond/tank.

from there, i will share some ideas of filtering system.

thanks for the input.
first thing to consider is the volume of water
to be filtered which is approximately 730 gallons.

2nd is what fishes and how many are you planning to
put in the pond.

3rd is the algae formation due to direct sunlight
exposure.

filtration requirements: minmum of 5 cycles a day
giving in consideration on the kind and lateral
surface area of the filter media to be used.

fish of 1 to 1.5 inches long, generally required
25 gallons for the first fish, then 5 gallons per
1 inch of fish thereafter.. (koi data reference)

in some pond (10,000 sq.m. with average depth of
1 meter, i used centrifugal pump 2 hp with a 1.5"dia
suction and discharge line. however, i gave emphasis
on filtering system. using a lot of media: foam, gravels,
volcanic cynders, and plenty of growing plants along the
free flowing water line back to the pond, i was able to
keep the water clear and able to control the growth of
algae in the pond.

i will ask my client if i can post pictures of the set up
i've done in his pond.
