hey guys

just bought an ehiem 2228 1050 lph canister for my 325 litre tank. with 2 over the top filters it will be a total of 1600 lph.

how many oscars can i put in there and am i able to have any tank mates? it would be good to have fish that eat the left overs. i know clown loaches are good but is there anything else?

also the filter is second hand and has water in it. however i wont be using it until about 7 months when the oscars grow up. how do i preserve it and shoudl i dry it out or anything?

thanks guys

hi mate,

325 liters is approximately 85 gal size which can
accomodate 2 oscar and few small tankmates. but it
will be good for about 18 months. once fully grown
your tank will be small for them.

tank not in use should be exchange to lfs and just buy
a new one when needed, otherwise, you will end up with
broken reserve tank:laugh:

for life your 325 liter tank can house one oscar and a couple of mid sized tankmates (something in the 6-8 inch range). as for your filter i would disguard the water that is in it and clean it thoroughly. and start using as soon as its clean. this will help in the seeding of the canister filter and even though your oscars might be small now he and your filter will grow together.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

cool thanks for hte info guys

i was wondering, because i have 1600 lph, would that mean i can have more than recommended? or is it still not enough to house 2 oscars and perhaps 2 jack dempseys or 2 blue acara?

i really dont need to use the filter rite now, as all i have is 3ft tanks with canisters already on them. is it ok to just dry it out and leave it in storage?

its not a question of filtration it is more a question of space. i think you can do half what you would like. one oscar one jack and one acara. or one oscar two jacks, or one oscar and two acaras. the point being only one oscar. an 85 gallon tank is barely above the minimum size for a solitary oscar. remember these fish can easily grow to over a foot in lengh and add a mature jack at 9 inches and a six inch acara and your tank imho would be quite full.

and yes you can clean the canister and put it into storage howver you should change all the media when you set it up again.

in my study on storage things, anything that is to be kept
for more than a year without any indefinite time table is waste
of resources. being glass and fragile, risk of breaking is high.
i suggest you make a deal with your local fish store for ex-deal
for a bigger tank but to be rebated once the new tank had been
cycled and all fish had been transfered, better get rid of it while
still intact.

there is no overfiltering in tank, and oscar needs wider swimming area
to be happy. so even if your pump is 1600lph, your tank remains 325 liters.

sound good that the tank was in use than to keep it idle.
re: the pump, just dry it before storing to avoid corrosion
of the internal part so that you can use it later. but there
is no guarantee it won't corode.
