I thought it was worth mentioning that in the UK, commercially available aquariums don't get much bigger than 160 gallons. So if you are planning on keeping either three Oscars with lots of tank mates, or more than three Oscars, the chances are you're going to have to have a tank custom-made. I could be wrong about this, however I was at my local aquatic centre today and we were looking at all the different companies and the tanks they sell, and the largest was approaching 160 gallons. If you think about it, there are not many people who would buy tanks larger than this. I think that's the reason why Manufacturing stops at around 6 feet in length.

If anyone knows of companies that do sell off-the-shelf large aquariums (180 gallons plus) then please post the URL here. Please bear in mind we are talking UK gallons, not USA. In other words, 125 UK gallons is around 150 US gallons. 150 UK gallons is around 180 US gallons. I'm only talking UK gallons in this thread.

I don't know about the USA, I would imagine it's the same.

I had my 300 gallon tank made by a company called AC Aquatics

http://www.acaquatics.co.uk/

I would highly recommend them, I had a few problems but they were quite happy to put things right. Also, I complained about a tiny scratch on the door and they gave me £100 compensation, rather than going to the trouble of sending a new door. The scratch wasn't barely anything to worry about.

Remember that you will also have to have a cabinet made. However, you could use breeze blocks, that might be a cheaper option. I think it's good that we've got a few manufacturers in the UK. I must admit, AC Aquatics were very reasonable, just over £800 for the tank, cabinet, lid and sump filter.

that's a good price for a tank that size. If I did go for a larger tank i was going to site it in the garage. this is why I am not sure about it. Its not that visible ( i want to see it) and is very cold in winter and very hot in summer. i think i could have more problems than i need. I keep meaning to read the monster tank post as a concrete room with a glass front would work better be cheaper and be larger. also my garage is used by my motor bike(fumes may be a problem)

I think you would have huge problems with temperature fluctuations if you were to how house your tank in a garage where there is no heating. Room temperature would have a profound affect on the water temperature even though you would have heaters running. Also, it would cost you a lot more because your heaters would probably be on all the time in the winter trying to keep up with the water temperature.

You can't put a very large tank such as my 300 gallon in a house unless you got a concrete floor, I think it would be mad to even attempt to put it on a wooden floor. I think my 300 gallon tank contains over three tons of water. I've got in my garage conversion which is where I spend most of my time. Even though the original garage had a concrete floor, I still had to have a lot of installation put down. So what they did is cut out a section in the installation and put in concrete for the tank to stand on.

I would advise anyone to think very carefully before going for large tanks. They are not cheap to run, you have to have a lot more heating, more lighting, and more powerful pumps. Also, if you're on a water meter like most of us will be at some stage, water changes are much bigger.

I think it's as I thought, commercially available tanks don't get much bigger than 160 gallons. I got an e-mail back from the company itself about the largest tank available off the shelf. I must say, bloody good value for money
