TOPIC: green water

green water 3 years, 3 months ago #23512

I believe it just algae in the water but I can't see the other side of my tank it's so bad, nothing is growing on the rocks or side its just in the water, I've tried things suck as Algaefix with no change whatsoever, any ideas?

Thanks,
Andrew

Agae can be brought on for various reasons. Too much light, lack of plants, nutrients in the water. Probably the most common reason for algae in most community aquariums is because people will insist on leaving their lights on for ages. Even though you often get 12 hours of sunlight in the tropics, leaving the lights on for this period of time will only increase the chances of lots of algae. Also, if you have your tank in direct sunlight than this is another reason why algae is often prolific.

And then we have to talk about overfeeding. If you overfeed the fish probably won't eat all of the food. Algae will thrive if uneaten food is left in the tank.

Finally, plants are a great asset to any fish tank. You often find that heavily planted fish tanks don't contain much nitrate. Plants soak up nitrate which is what algae also thrives on. Unfortunately plants and Oscars don't always go together.

Water changes are so important, if nitrate are levels are always high, you'll find that algae will also thrive.

if you put a net bag of barley seeds in the tank and leave the lights off for a week it will clear...once its clear keep the lights on only for about 4-5 hours a day..it will stay clear

another area to look into is the manner you clean your filter.
can you give us detail how you go about it? thin film of algae
in the inner glass plus cloudy water renders your tank poor
viewing. if you have green film of algae but with clear water,
viewing can still be enjoyable.
