I was just wondering what the benefits of a powerhead would be if i were to put one in my tank. I won't be using it with an under gravel filtration system. Would it be worth my money to put one in the tank?

depends on the purpose. power head are used mainly
to agitate the water in the tank. however, with some
modification, it can be used in filtering system.
i am using 2 x 2400LPH power head in my 5 x 21 x 24 tanks.
and they works perfectly for me.

basically, this is how i modify my power head.
(250LPH at tank 24 x 18 x 21 with 12 gold fish)
i am using an over-head open box as receiver (filter),
full of media and other elements like ceramic balls, etc.
all water were drawn and deliver towards the box, filtered
and removed all dirt and impurities, then water flows back
toward the tank. the gap between the discharged point and the
water level produces bubbles (aerate) that give dissolve oxygen.

some people don't like the set up because of the sound of flowing
water. in my case, i love it as if i am living near the river bank.
i have two tanks, a 90 gal and 110 gal with 2 x 2200lph power head
each. i have plants in my 90 gal tanks where i enjoy the minimal
water change.

It would be easier to call a power head just a pump, then people would not get confused and think that it is a necessary item in the tank. If for some reason you wanted to create a kind of current then you could use a power head. Personally if you want to oxygenate your tank, save yourself a lot of money and get an air stone and pump that are made just for that purpose, I paid about £10 for mine. The small air pump sits on the outside of the tank and you can feed pipe in through the back.

I have two Eheim pumps in my sump filter. They cost around £80 each but they are extremely powerful because they need to pump a lot of water around 300 gallon tank. I don't actually need to use two of them, it's just good to have one in case the everyone packs up.
