I have never had media fall apart, so not normal. I use seachem pond matrix in every thing. It is a larger size of the standard matrix. Lasts for years.

it kinda just turned to mush :-/ so either that stuff i bought is defective or is super cheap, i would ask the guy i bought it from but he is full shit sometimes. ill see if can find that seachem stuff around here.

The only thing water has a hard time breaking down is anything made from oil, like plastic.

i've been reading more and more about K1 moving bed filters, even made one myself much like this one:
doesn't do much mechnical filtration but you can just set up a hob for that purpose
