are they any good?
I have never used 1 but later today i will be changing from sand to black gravel, im going to be totally changing my tank around.
but im wondering, would it be a good idea to get a undergravel filter
(as well as my 2x tetra 1200 external filters)
i just need to know if their any good and worth getting to help with the fish crap and uneaten fish food.

they are a bit of a dated filtration teqnique now glen ..i just stopped using one in a 90gal that had been running for ten years!!!!!! with 2 x 1500lph powerheads ,one on each uplift tube, the water was crystal but all the crap stays in the tank and ugf tanks harbour the crap in the substrate like you wont beleive!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i would not reccomend you use one in an oscar tank as you want the crap OUT of the tank not trapped in.........canisters /sumps /externals are far better system of filtration and easier to keep clean..just my opinion after using ugf for the last 10 years

after reading and reviewing all posting about ugf, i was surprised
that what i am using before was ugf. but i stop using ugf because
as bgh point out, crap and waste remain in the water and may eventually
leach back to the tank. however, there are some modification that i had
introduce in the system that makes ugf effective and usefull. i will post
it later together with my cylindrical filtering system.

there is a way to hook up an ugf that works fabulously in oscars tanks. i personally havent tried it but i know that dinger and delboy have used it with great success. if i remember correctly it has to be used in conjuction with a canister filter and is hooked up in reverse. ill try to find the proper post for it. i know its here somewhere.

yeah thats what im talking about, i read a review ages ago about connecting it up to an external, thats the reason i was thinking of giving it a go, im using 2 tetra 1200 external filters so thought it'd help with fish poop if i connected a ugf to 1 of my tetra's.
i dont know how to do it yet. but was wondering if it would work.
at the moment, im cleaning the bottom of my tank every 2 days and i mean its getting really bad.
my oscars are growing faster than i can believe.
im in the process as we speak of changing from sand over to onyx black gravel which i bought earlier today.
im changing the look of the tank, dark gravel, dark backing and dimmer lights.
with some rocks across the back of the tank and some large pieces of wood going right across the tank.
so thats why i asked about the ugf.
cheers guys for the info.
