TOPIC: Filtration setup, Advice needed!!

Filtration setup, Advice needed!! 3 years, 1 month ago #27385

I just set up a 60 gallon tank, And I bought a penn-plex Cascade 1000 canister. It cleans 230 -300 gph. I was wondering if this is a good filtration system or should I get something diffrent. Do I need the bio-wheel filtration. If so, should I go with two systems?
PLease any advice would be wonderful.
And any advice about heaters. Where to put them? A good temp. to keep them at. A good brand to buy.

i would recommend a canister over most other types of filters. for very large tanks a sump is best but thats over kill for you. a large canister will fit your system very well. The size you are looking at is about right 200g+. I haven't herd of the filter you mention and I would always recommend a Fluval or Eheim. these are makes that have proven themselves as reliable for many yrs. they may cost a little more but in the long run the service life will pay off.

temp should be around 28c and again fluval and eheim and you cant go wrong. size wise look for 100g ish as it will be cheaper to run a larger heater. 2 is always better than 1 in case 1 goes wrong. that said and they are fairly reliable too. get a guard (plastic cover)for it as oscars can brake them. as for fitting if you have 1 fit it at back of the tank set horizontal. if you have 2, 1 each side again horizontal.set it low down in water a little off the bottom 2-4"

I figure this filter will service your tank quite well. If anything, I would add as complementation or back up a sponge filter to assure biological filtration (e.g. Hagen dual sponge or Hydro Sponge IV).

the cascade 1000 is a caniter that is rated for 100 us gallon tank. while your oscars are small this will be more than adequate for your tank. however when they reach maturity i would increase the filtration by using either a quality hob(like th aqua clear 110) or another canister in conjuction with the cascade.
as for heater marineland makes a quality product as well as fluval. i use an ehiem jagger heater personally but have heard great reviews about the others.
for temp i keep my oscar tanks at 78 farenheit but anyting between 75-80 is acceptable.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!
