what do mean by noodles? is it the ceramic one with core?
if it is, just give them a good wash and will be fine to use.
boiling is just an extra precaution to remove any possible toxin.
don't look for carbon, you can do without them. a good sponge or
polishing pad will do.

any idea what brand, type, and capacity?

a little more info on the type and model of the filter will help in deciding the best course of action you should take with your new filter. also what fiter do you presently have running on your system and tank size would be beneficial
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

my goal is simple a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all

sorry about that.
it is a canister filter Eheim professionel number 2 and noodles are ceramic.
its a bit bigger than my Aqua One CF-1000 canister filter. i was thinking of running both in my 400ltr tank.
1 x oscar 30cm
1 x pleco 15cm
1 x clown (more coming when i can find big ones)

cheers

aside from the ceramic balls, are the other components still intact? if so, just give them a good rinse and ready to roll. (i suggest better use tank water in rinsing)

Paul, Your sure you dont need carbon in a filter? I thought the carbon was supposed to collect and kill toxins in the water. But then again the guy at the lfs might just want me to buy more carbon every 3 months...

Using or not activated charcoal is a personal choice.

I've found reasonable statements both against and in favor of its use.

Not all my tanks have activated charcoal.

I keep this type of chemical filtration in my Oscars' tank for one reason only: I keep Kenyi in there and they wouldn't be comfortable in tea-colored water (I use Indian Almond Tree Leaves to lower pH and add tannins and other organic compounds to the water).

In tanks that I keep overstocked (and I acknowledge that I push the limits here) I also use chemical filtration.

Using activated charcoal is not risk free: If not replaced timely it will release back to the water column most of the impurities it captured while "active". If for whatever reason I ran out of replacement I take out the "due" charcoal and leave the tank without it.

ha ha ha, you missed one point pepe. in tropical country, you can wash the activated carbon core, leave it under shearing heat of sun for several days, and it will ready for re-use. (of course with shorter duration) same effectiveness.
