Hi Re:- D&D Aquarium solutions sulphur Nitrate Filter Does anyone have any experience with these filters - I understand the flow rate need to be about 30 l/h.Is there a pump that can produce this low level of flow. Also is this the filter that smells like 'bad eggs' if you don't get this right. I have a problem keeping Nitrates low, constantly using Nitrasafe and Nitra- Zorb htrough my Fluval internal powerhead filter. I am constantly having to recharge these in salt which I go through at the rate of 25kg in 6 months. I would be extremely grateful for an opinion or an alternate solution. Thanks

Funnily enough Nigel I was looking into nitrate filters not long ago. But like you said, they have to be set up correctly and can be quite fiddly apparently. I also understand they can alter your pH as well. The thing is, you will still have to carry out tank maintenance, i.e. vacuuming the gravel and the such. I actually don't know anyone who uses them. The filter I was looking at cost something around £300. I'm glad I didn't buy it in the end

Thanks for your reply to this Penn and also thanks for re-classifying this topic as I am still trying to find my way around the forum - I have read that if you don't set up these Sulphur nitrate removers correctly - they can smell like bad eggs and also it can take quite a while for the bacteria required to colonise sufficiently to break down the nitrate so I thought I would apply a posting to see if anyone has had any experience in using this type of Nitrate remover. Well, if it smells anything like a catalytic converter, it won't be very nice.

When I looked into them, it seemed that they were used on discus tanks quite a lot. I did give it some thought and came to the conclusion that nitrate levels are very easy to keep under control with sensible stocking and frequent water changes. I didn't think the expense of one of these nitrate filters was worth the hassle. After all, you would then have to worry about two sets of filters.
