Actually, no. I think the old corner box filters are just as good as the sponge filters that many on this forum use. Just fill them with biomedia and you are good to go.

I'm no fan of undergravel filters, however.

I tried this already on the other Oscar forum, if you look for an cheap and effective way to filter your tanks you should look to build an HMF (Hamburger Matten Filter)










I use them in a hand of smaller tanks between 15 and 65G and they are great. I can move about 200 to 210 Gph with about 3 Watt.
