salmonator created the topic: butti and jag?

Would a butti and a jag be able to live together in a 200 gallon?

Could be possible, but having two of the most aggressive fish in a tank like that is not a good choice. One will likely be dominate and bully the other fish to death. A few more to help spread the aggression and it may work or it may be a constant war zone.

Okay. So if I try it and it doesn't work out which fish you think would be better as a single wet pet in a 200 gallon

This is just my opinion but Jags get better with age and size where as all the old butti seem to just get ugly. Many of them just become ugly black fish with no cool distinguishing stripes like they had as juveniles. Again just my opinion. ;)

Yeah that's what I was thinking lol. Would a single male jaguar fill the 200 nicely?

You maybe be able to keep him with a bottom fish of some sort. Maybe a nice large pleco, catfish or bichir.

I have a solo wet pet with my Oscar (has a small pleco in with) and a 210g community and I like the community the best for all the interaction. But a solo Jag in 200 gallons would be very happy.

Big tanks also allow for some nice sized pieces of driftwood that in combo with a big fish would make an outstanding display.

I would not attempt to match up a West African riverine cichlid that has a snail eaters jaws against a CA piscivore like a P. Managuensis. While both are very aggressive, a Jag, especially a male, would have a decided advantage in a fight. I have a 11" male Jag, & I have him alone in a 125GL for a good reason....outside of a Dovii or an Umbee , he would annihilate any other cichlid in that tank.

Besides that, I concur w/ DMD123..................Buttis are an ugly fish. Jags are awesome:

I was wanting to get a male jag if I get one. Could I buy like six? And just choose the male I like if I get one. Think those are good odds? Also any good books I can read up on them? I have a small one. But not to much info

Out of six Im sure you would get at least one male. I think you should look for the Holy Grail of jags... Xanthic
