richardtf created the topic: Return pump for a sump

Hi everyone!
I'm in a process of shopping for a return pump on my sump, how do you know what size of pump to use? Any recommendations?

Thanks

Note: I don't use sumps, but I'll try to answer your question.

It depends on the size of your tank and the number of times you want the water to cycle through the sump per hour. E.g., If you have a 75 gallon tank and want to cycle the water 10 times per hour, 75 x 10 = 750gph[/u]. You also need to make sure your overflow box and/or pipe(s) can easily accommodate that flow rate.

For the pipe (internal) diameter:

I love external pumps personally, they're nice and quiet ( can barely hear my 240 running ) Iawaki externals are awesome. Little giants are also recommended. If you're going with a large internal pump, definitely the danner mag pumps. Those things are invincible.

I recommend cleaning out your pumps at least twice a year, so make sure you use a union when plumbing your tank!
