JBare created the topic: I'm frustrated

So, I came home from work today and BOTH my C4 and AC70 weren't working. We know this is not a new issue. But I've finally found out why it's happening.

If you've seen my videos you know Marshall likes to relocate his sand. Apparently he's relocating it right up into the filtration and jamming them. If I didn't love the sand, he'd be bare bottomed this weekend.

Any tips other than remove the sand?

On a happier note, petsmart.com is having a crazy good sale and I just bought a Filstar M for $86.99. I'm hoping things will work better with the M than it did the L. I've seen it mentioned a few times that an L on a 75 is difficult.

Here's hoping. :-)

Go with an bigger grained and more heavy sand. Something between 0.8 and 1.2mm grain size will work

I do agree that a heavier grade sand would work, but if your intake unit is high enough, the sand shouldn't be able to reach it.. You might make it a bit shorter and see what happens. Either that or put Marshal in a 90 tall. I had this happen to an AC70 too. Ruined the motor.

They are actually on the highest setting, but he takes mouthfuls and spits at the intake tube, then attacks it.

Apparently your fish has been watching 'Finding Nemo' and is planning his big escape by trying to destroy the filter.... ;)

Sounds like you just need to use a pre-filter sponge on the end of your filters

Well the only other things I can think of (besides replacement of the substrate) is some kind of fine mesh over the intake. But there might be different types of HOBs available that don't feed directly into the motor like the AC's do. I haven't investigated this, but perhaps others can think of examples.

ETA: or as DMD suggests, no HOB at all.

A filter sock zip-tied around the intake would keep the sand from entering.

That's the craziest thing ... spitting sand into the intake. Your oscar likes causing trouble.

@UNC I can definitely say, I laughed when I read about the teenager stage because I don't remember it when I had them before, but Marshall is showing his colors.

@DMD thanks, ugly as hell but it'll have to do lol
