Hey everyone... its been a while since i have been on. So i have been having really high nitrates in my tank. .i know some of it comes from my tapwater. I have 0 nitrites and 0 ammonia. I have a single 12" tiger oscar. He is in a 135 gallon acrylic aquarium. As far as filters go. I am running a Filstar xp-L and 2 fluval fx6's. I have been reading a lot about bio-pellet reactors (like foster/smith master pellet3). I do not have a sump. i cannot hang anyhitn on the back of the tank. The tank also has a wooden canopy.

I am wondering if anyone here has used a media reactor by itself to lower nitrates. If so, how did you hook it up and how did you get the water flow into the reactor.

I have been looking at the pellet master 3 from dr. foster and smith.

Any advice helps. I currently use fluval nitrate remover but that only works in the short term.

my take on this is a 3 consecutive large water change without touching the filter.
test the water in every after water change... t see the improvement..

It is after water change. I thought it was before. Why?

how much nitrate do you have in your tap water? and how fast does it build up in your tank?

Don't dwell on what went wrong. Instead focus on what to do next

to find out the difference of nitrate after the water and yes, the level the following day..
this will give you the idea how fast the toxin was converted into nitrate, the end nitrogen
cycle

To get the flow into the reactor, you would use a small sized pump with a valve to control the water flow into it. There's a catch though, the slime that leaves the reactor must be removed or filtered through some fine media because if it is released into the aquarium, it will decay, and release ammonia.

slime is the substance accumulated at the reactor pellets overtime .
if not remove, it will clogged up those holes and renders the reactors ineffective

in some model, they use reactor plates, not pellets
