Maxthecax created the topic: Filter for 180g tank

I'm soon setting up an 180g tank with 2 oscars, 1 Jack Dempsey, and 1 Green Terror. I want the water to be crystal clear without breaking the bank. I was thinking an HOB and canister filter combo? Would this work? What brand filters should I use?

If you don't want to break the bank only put 2 fish, otherwise, you will have to spend money to support the bioload for that many adult fish.

Get at least a single Fluval FX6 or 2 canisters that work for 200g+ tanks. You can add an aquaclear 110 to the canisters if you want for added filtration.

if i were you i would get a couple eheim 2217 and 1 or 2 aquaclear 110 or emperor 400 its not cheap but good filtration is necessary

Don't dwell on what went wrong. Instead focus on what to do next

On a 180 with a single large cichlid I have an FX5 and AC110. Another 180 with 2 adult Oscars I have FX5, Filstar xp4 and AC110. If you are determined to have 4 large cichlids you will need a lot of filter.

This would be my recommendation too. The FX5s and FX6s have a reputation for being difficult to manage. Nothing easier to use than the Eheims imo and a couple of the 2217s will be about the same cost of the FX6. I got mine for about 150 a piece from Big Als.
