Well, thanks to you guys my albino red oscar that I have had for just over 2 months is very healthy and growing at an amazing rate. I want to say thanks!

I was wondering what you guys recommend for heaters? I am running a aqueon 300watt right now in my 75gal aquarium. I am skeptical of its quality. Plus I have it turned down past 72 on the dial and my tank is at 82. I'm assuming it's not the right heater for my tank.

What advice do you have for cleaning mechanical filter pads? I have been doing a minimum of 50% water changes once a week. And cleaning the filter pads every other week. I am running an emperor 400. Not sure how often to clean the filter pads because idk how much good bacteria builds up in there.

good to know your oscar is doing well...

if you set the heater at 72 and the water attains 82, there must be some problem.
heater is supposed to cut off the power when the water temp reached the temp set up.
how did you know the water temp? do you have separate thermometer?
i suggest you tried to set is up to lower range and find out what would be the real temp..
anyway... 82 is acceptable temp for an oscar

An obvious observation here, but if you are North of the Equator and in mid summer your tank may be at room temperature and have nothing to do with the heater. 300w is very strong for 75g. I use a 150. I have a couple of Aqueon 300's they handle 125g on their own and do seem to be fairly accurate according to the thermostat. Mechanical portions of your filter should be rinsed when they need it. If you can go longer, do it. Your bb is mostly housed in the bio wheels, never touch those.

I have a thermometer inside the tank and a digital one as well. I keep my house normally at 78 degrees. I just figured the aqueon 300 was to much for the 75. And it is always hotter than what I set the dial at.

a good heater should not operate beyond the calibrated set up.
even if it is 300W, it should just heat the tank to the desired calibrated temp,
unless the unit is malfunctioning...

Aqueon is sending me a new heater because the other one is faulty. So I get to pick between the glass or the Pro Series. Wondering what one was a better heater.

aqueon Pro is always better than the glass because oscar is known in breaking the heater...
