I have two Hang on filters and just want to make sure that they are acceptable. One is the penguin 300 and the other is a aquatech something. The aquatech is rated for up to 60 gallon aquarium and the penguin I think is rated to 70 gallon. The tank is a 75 gallon. I know neither of these will compete with some canisters and sump filters you guys have, but I just do not have 2-300 bucks to blow on a filter right now.
as long as your oscar is still small your filtration should be able to keep up with the load. but i would recomend upgrading your filtration as soon as you can. if price is a concern you could go with an aquaclear 110(made by hagen) to run with your penguin and you should be covered for fitration depending on your stocking list.

Please check the rated flow of each filter and add them up. That's your nominal maximum overturn. If it is close to 10 times your tank then you should be covered. If you can't find the info, please post the models so we can help you figuring this out.
You could also enhance your biological filtration by placing a fairly sized sponge filter as back-up to your two HOBs.
I've been using three AquaClear 110 as the main system in my Oscar tank (3x500GPH =1,500 (US)GPH to filter 145(US)Gal = 121(UK)Gal). Take out the substrate, decor and fish volume and I likely have 120(US) or 100(UK) gallons of water in there.
n the end your water parameters will tell you if your tank filtration system is adequate or not. I put more emphasis in biological filtration followed by mechanical and lastly chemical. I use all three.
As long you set up efficient filtration system you should enjoy Oscarkeeping. It's up to you to figure out what works for your particular setting. I do believe you can provide optimal care to one Oscar in an adequately set 70gal tank.
the marineland runs at about 300 gph so your putting the aquatech filter at 350 gph.
now i have an aquatech 60 that i used to run on 20 gallon neon tank and if we are talking about the same filter it flows at no where near that rate. of the two filters you ahve mentioned the penguin is the best but the other....personally i would change it out and get something with a little more flow to it.
just my 2 cents.

that is the same filter that i had on my tetra tank. for small community settign they work fine but for large messy fish like oscars they dont have what it takes to handle the bio and waste loads.
you can get a aquaclear 110 off ebay for about $60 or so. this filter used in conjuction with your penguin will be more than enough to handle the filtration on your 75 gallon tank.
heres a link for you

I broke down and bought a xp2 canister. To do this I traded in the penguin and got a little bit of store credit. I still have the aquatech though. Hopefully I now have enough filtraton.
I don't have any yet. Ive got what is in my signature. I am going away for a month and will be unable to put the maintenance needed for big oscars. I will only be able to do a water change and re-fill the auto feeder I am going to have to get about 2 weeks into the month. I will be getting tiger oscars to join the survivors.
