Does anyone know of any aquarium heaters that are more than 300 W? Setting up a 300 gallon tank isn't as straightforward as you may think. Filtration is not a problem, lighting is okay, heating is a little difficult. I would just prefer to find maybe a five or 600 W heater and have a couple of heaters in the sump, rather than having to have three or four 300 W heaters. I did think about Pond filter that they start off at around 3 kW and cost around £300, I don't think I'll be going down that route. Mind you, if they are on a thermostat, maybe I wouldn't be using all that power much. Something to think about. Not sure that I like the price they.

Yeah, I need heater for my future big tanks. SO...I did a little research and so far the easiest way is to use and attach several smaller heaters. For one- it's hard to find a giant heater- and second- if one heater fails, the other ones could keep it fairly warm until a new heater has been recieved. That's what I'm doing for my tanks.

That is what I will probably have to do. Mind you, I was looking at the specifications for a 300 W heater and they reckon that they will only do something like a 60 gallon tank. I'm not sure I totally agree with that. I have got a 300 W heater on my 125 gallon tank and my water temperature is perfectly okay. Mind you, I haven't tried turning it up to 30°C or anything like that. I don't really want to have to have about five or six heaters in the sump, that would be ridiculous. What I want to try and avoid is having the heater on all the time, that will just eat electricity. If we can have a heater that is big enough, it will only come on intermittently when the water drops below a certain temperature, just like in your house. Using inadequate heating on the big tank will cost you loads.

Ummm........ just have to wait and see, I will do some more searching and hopefully someone may have an idea. Mind you, Mr cracker in Australia has got a 1000 L tank, maybe he will have a few ideas

For my 1000 liter (265 gal) aquarium and 300 liter sump I use two 300W heaters and they do the job all year round.

Ever think about using an inline heater instead of a submersible? I've never tried one but I've seen them in the Doctors Foster and Smith catalog. It heats the water while it's returning from your sump. Also, heaters draw the majority of their power when they intially heat up. The power required to get the coil up to temp. is a function of the heater core's size. (function meaning increases geomertically) Two 300w heaters should draw substancially less power than a 600w @ startup. So runnng lots of little ones would be cheaper. If you ran smaller ones, you'd also have the opportunity to spread them around in your sump to achieve maximum effciency. Check out the inline heaters though. I'm thinking of using one for my next project.
Keeping fish is only as hard as you choose to make it.

That doesn't seem a lot for the amount of water you have got. Mind you, how warm is your house most of the time? I like the water to be between 26 and 27°C, which is at the moment on my 125 gallon tank which only has a 300 W heater. Probably start off with a couple of 300 W heaters and see what happens.

My house can get as low at 10C when I'm not home. I am running the tank at 23C but have had it up to 27C. I use steel heaters with separate thermostats (upstream of the heaters) to improve efficiency, but I still experience fluctuations of up to 1 full degree across the tank. I don't know how much power the heaters use but they are rarely operating when I glance at them.

I think that my aquarium is well insulated due to the foam background, 12mm glass and tight fitting lids on the tank and sump. It takes days for the temperature to drop just a few degrees.

My friend has a 4ftx2x2 tank and he has 1 300w on it and he keeps his tank at 30. My 6ftx2x2.5 tank has 2 300w heaters and its not a problem. So I think worse case you will need 3 300w heaters
