Would it hurt anything to double the size of my filtration unit?
As an example if I had a 55 gallon tank, could I use a filtration system for a 110 gallon tank?

If you plan on keeping an Oscar,You most definitely will want to double or even triple the rated filtration. I'm rated at filtration for 300 gal. in a 75 gal. with one 10" Oscar.

yes you can. there is no such over filtration in happy fish keeping.
but i suggest you split it in two equal size (if not yet on hand) so
that you have a back up in the event one bugged down.

I run a 180 gallon with a 5'sump.
I'm using a central-heater pump thats runs upto 3000l.
A sump will increase your bacterial amount and would mean you could put in more fish.
I do 50% waterchanges for estetics and vacuum every week, but never have any nitrates etc problems.
My tank is so incredibly clean, visual, no floating stuff or dust whatsoever.
I like extra filterpower!
Keeps maintenance low!
Our fish don't grow too big, our tank becomes too small!

that is why there is no over filtration in a tank. what we can achieve is a
low maintenance tank.....
